Project Details
ASMTI is located near Greenvale North Queensland to support the training of up to 14,000 Singaporean Armed Force personnel.
The Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI) is a bilateral program that was launched in 2015 to strengthen Defence capabilities and foster the relationship between Australia and Singapore. The program will bring lasting economic benefits to Central and North Queensland through the development of these training areas. Formalised through the Treaty on Military Training and Training Area Development ratified in 2020, the ASMTI envisions up to 14,000 Singapore Armed Forces personnel conducting 18 weeks of annual training in Australia over a 25-year period.
Program Details:
As part of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the ASMTI involves Singapore's investment in two training areas in Central and North Queensland, with the Commonwealth managing these sites. One of these locations includes the newly acquired Greenvale Training Area in the Charters Towers region, which is currently undergoing environmental assessment. Construction on the Greenvale project is expected to begin in late 2024.
The ASMTI represents a significant opportunity to deepen Defence cooperation between Australia and Singapore while also generating long-term economic benefits for the regional communities hosting the training activities.
