Fully committed: Great Barrier Reef Aquarium rebuild secured

August 22, 2024

Prime Minister of Australia Hon Anthony Albanese MP has committed $100 million to the national reef education centre.

The additional funding will allow the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to create a new, purpose built facility aimed at achieving global excellence in tropical reef education and offering immersive experiences that attract both domestic and international visitors of all ages and abilities.

Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith said the announcement is a historic milestone for the city.

"Celebrating our region's leadership in education and marine science, the committed funding to rebuild the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium will put Townsville North Queensland on the global stage as the headquarters of the Great Barrier Reef.”

“The Aquarium component within the Great Barrier Reef Centre of Excellence will alone generate more than 1,300 direct and indirect jobs, and contribute over $444M to our local economy - delivering unrivalled economic benefit, global profile and education and conservation advantages.”

Reef HQ has been closed since 2019 with the original commitment of $80 million was not enough for the full rebuild. The

Since its opening in 1987 the aquarium welcomed over 4.5 million visitors before closing in 2021 to undergo refurbishment. After discovering deeper problems with the original build a refurbishment did not represent the best value for money as it wouldn't be fit for purpose for the long-term future. The decision of a complete rebuild would require additional funding which has now been secured.
