Project Details
The proposed wind energy project will generate up to 400 MW of power from 100 turbines and will be located 65km south-west of Ingham.
Gawara Baya is a major renewable wind energy project located about 65km south-west of Ingham. The project is expected to supply clean power to 240,000 Australian homes, reducing the country's carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 million tonnes annually. It received environmental approvals from the federal government in mid-2024 with development to start early 2025, and testing and commissioning to be completed by the end of 2027. Due to the remoteness of the project an accommodation camp will be developed at the project site to house the workers during construction.
Strategic Importance
Gawara Baya represents a crucial early-transition opportunity for large-scale clean energy generation in Australia. The project strategically aligns with the existing electricity transmission network, positioning it to help address the projected shortage of renewable energy supply by 2027. As a key driver in meeting time-sensitive decarbonization goals, Gawara Baya will play a vital role in transitioning Australia's energy mix towards a more sustainable future.
