Project Details
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has plans to develop the site where the old Reef HQ building will be replaced with a new state-of-the-art facility. The development aims to draw both domestic and international tourists, enhancing its role in educating the public about the reef conservation and inspiring future generations. The facility will showcase the Great Barrier reef and offer top-tier reef education for Queenslanders and provide immersive experiences for people of all ages and abilities. Opting for a new build rather than refurbishing the old structure was the more cost-effective, long-term solution that will better serve future needs. In mid-2024 an additional $100 million of funding was redirected towards the project to develop the new build.
