Project Details
The world-first Burdekin Macro-Algal Treatment Facility is set to be completed in late 2024.
The Burdekin Macro-Algal Treatment Facility, a groundbreaking project, began construction mid-2023 with a six-hectare site at the Ayr Waste Water treatment plant. This facility is a partnership between the Burdekin Shire Council and RegenAqua. It's set to use native green algae to clean wastewater by removing harmful nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, protecting the Great Barrier Reef, and capturing carbon dioxide. The construction includes high-rate algal ponds essential for creating the perfect conditions for algae growth and wastewater treatment, with the plant set to be commissioned in 2024.
