Project Details

The 1,100km CopperString 2032 transmission network, extending from Woodstock out to Mount Isa and the North West Minerals Province (NWMP), will be the largest geographic extension of the National Electricity Market (NEM). The Queensland Government has purchased the project to unlock new economy mineral deposits in the North West.

The Powerlink-led CopperString 2032 project initially involves building 840 kilometres (km) of new electricity transmission line from just south of Townsville in the Burdekin region to Mount Isa that will connect Queensland’s North West Minerals Province to the National Electricity Market for the first time in Australia’s history. Approximately 200km of additional transmission line will be required to connect new renewable generators to CopperString 2032.

In October 2023, the Queensland Government announced $1.3 billion to advance the construction of CopperString 2032. This funding supported the project to fast track construction that commenced mid-2024 at Hughenden with the construction of the workforce accommodation and facilities. The project is expected to be completed by 2029.
