The Australian Defence Minister revealed the new Apache helicopters that will be based in Townsville from 2025, with the 29 AH-64E Apaches from Boeing which will be based in Townsville from 2025.

The Australian Government is investing nearly $700 million to upgrade RAAF Base Townsville to support the new AH-64E Apache helicopters. This is part of a broader effort to improve the Australian Defence Force's ability to operate from northern bases, one of the six priority areas identified in the recent Defence Strategic Review. As part of this, the Army's 1st Aviation Regiment will relocate to Townsville over time as it phases out the ARH Tiger in favor of the Apache. Maintenance support for the Apache and Chinook helicopters will be provided by Boeing Australia in Townsville. The Defence Minister stated that this geographic consolidation of industrial support will enhance operational reliability and reduce sustainment and flying costs for the ADF's helicopter fleet.

The new Apaches are set to be in region by 2025, and being deployed until 2029. Boeing has won a $306 million for the maintenance, training and logistics contract. This contract will bring around 70 people to the region.
