Project Details

Vecco is already operating a 35MWh per annum of vanadium electrolyte manufacturing facility. The group is now planning to increase the capacity to over 300MWh per annum with a new plant that has been specifically designed to produce a range of electrolyte products to meet the specifications of the major global vanadium battery manufacturers.

Idemitsu Australia, Sumitomo Electric Industries, and Vecco Group have joined forces to establish a vanadium flow battery manufacturing supply chain in North Queensland. The three major companies have signed a Collaboration Agreement to oversee the process from mining the raw materials to producing the final energy storage products.

Under this non-exclusive agreement, Idemitsu will be responsible for marketing, selling, and delivering the vanadium flow batteries to Australian customers. Sumitomo Electric will provide the hardware for the battery systems, while Vecco Group will handle the mining and refining of high-purity vanadium from their Julia Creek mine located in Queensland's northwest minerals province. Vecco will then manufacture the battery electrolyte in Townsville at a secured site at Cleveland Bay Industrial Park.

The detailed design work for a commercial production facility to support this vertically integrated supply chain is currently underway. The project recently received prescribed project status from Queensland's Coordinator-General.
